Adventure(r)

As young dude Bucky McMahon became a fanatical surfer and tireless player of pick-up sports of all kinds. He did not apply himself academically, attended college reluctantly, and affects to remember much of this poorly.

After a series of Raymond Carver-esque dead-end jobs, he declared a "do-over" and returned to college. While a graduate student at the Florida State University Creative Writing Department, he began publishing short fiction.

In 1992, he published his first feature article for Outside magazine. That was the beginning of a long, strange adventure in the travel/adventure writing biz. He continues to write for Outside, but scribbles also for Men's Journal, Esquire, Skin Diver, and other publications that ask him to explore and write.

Bucky McMahon? American Book Award Winner Bob Shachosis speaks out: "Think of the spawn of weird marriages -- Sir Richard Burton and Barry Hannah; Twain and Krakauer--and you'll begin to get a fix on McMahon, a master essayist and luminous spokesman for the ineffable metaphysical moment lurking at the vortex of knee-buckling danger and heart-stopping fun."
